Step-by-Step Process

Clear Everything Out First

Start by removing all trash, loose papers, and items that have accumulated in door pockets, cup holders, and the trunk. This is also a good time to take stock of what organizers and covers might need replacing or cleaning themselves.

Pull floor mats out completely so you can clean both sides and the floor underneath, which traps far more debris than most people expect.

Vacuum Methodically

Work from the top down: vacuum the headliner edges and seat backs before moving to seat cushions, then floors, and finally the trunk. This order keeps debris you dislodge from higher surfaces from re-settling onto areas you've already cleaned.

Use a narrow attachment for seat seams and console crevices, where crumbs and debris collect most stubbornly.

Wipe, Treat, and Reassemble

Wipe down hard surfaces — dashboard, door panels, console — with an appropriate interior cleaner, avoiding excess product on touchscreens or buttons. Treat any visible stains on fabric seats promptly with a fabric-safe cleaner, working from the outside of the stain inward to avoid spreading it.

Once everything is clean and dry, reinstall seat covers, trunk organizers, and trash cans. Returning these accessories last, after the surfaces underneath are clean, prevents trapping dirt beneath them.
